That photo you deleted? It might still exist. That message that ‘disappeared’? Someone may have screenshotted it first. The internet has a long memory, and the idea that anything online is truly temporary is a myth that gets people into real trouble. A quick screenshot or screen recording can bring anything back, years later.

This matters more than it seems. Future bosses, coaches, and even the future you will see the traces you leave. A joke that felt hilarious at 14 can look very different later, and people have lost opportunities over old posts. ‘Disappearing’ messages feel safe, but anyone can screenshot them and forward them anywhere, so assume anything you send could be seen by anyone.

Be extra careful when you feel something strongly. Posting while angry, excited, or under pressure is exactly when people put out things they later regret, because the feeling fades fast but the post stays forever. Before you post, run a two-second test: would I be okay with this being public, forever, with my name on it? If you hesitate even a little, listen to that. You can almost always post later, but you can rarely un-post.

And if something private of yours is shared without permission, it is not your fault. Keep the evidence, report it on the app, and tell a trusted adult who can help get it taken down. Lina, 16, once sent a mean joke in a ‘private’ group chat; someone screenshotted it and it spread, causing weeks of trouble. ‘Private’ online is never a promise, so protect your future self before you tap send.
